MACE is excited to have TAKE of the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Holton High School In House Training class to provide leadership, coordination, and support for the Kansas Student Technology Leadership Digital Media Competition on April 6, 2011 in Manhattan, Kansas at the Kansas State University Student Union!

The purpose of this competition is to allow students in Kansas schools an opportunity to showcase their work and to provide a venue to recognize their efforts and achievements.  Students will present projects they have developed as part of their technology classes or organizations. Project presentations will be judged and awards will be given at the end of the day.

This competition is open to all Kansas students in grades 6 thru 12.

Projects are judged by panelists from the field and to enhance continuity of the judging process, registrants will denote the type of presentation by:

*Individual or Group
*Grade Level Spreads K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, or Public
*Content Area or Focus (Reading, Math, School Info, etc..)

Entries for the KSTL Digital Media Competition must be original work and must not infringe copyright regulations.

All entries must be accompanied by a signed Copyright Declaration Form for each student involved in the project.

Advisors are responsible for submitting the signed Copyright Declaration Forms when they register on the day of the event. Advisors should oversee the student production process to verify that copyright rules are followed and that students will be eligible for placement in the competition.


DIVISIONS OF COMPETITION
 
Multimedia Presentation: Student(s) will demonstrate a multimedia presentation which he/she has created. This may be a PowerPoint, Keynote, Hyperstudio, Flash, Ezedia, or other multimedia presentation.

The time for student(s) to present the project is limited to 7 minutes.
Entry Categories for Multimedia: Content Area & Grade Level Spread (PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8 or 9-12)
Maximum Number of Entries : 24 in Middle School; 24 in High School


Social Media Innovation Presentation: Student(s) will demonstrate the student-led use of social media as it applies to an educational environment. The time for student(s) to present the project is limited to 7 minutes.

Video Production: Student(s) will present an original video production they have completed that informs the audience of "School News", "Sports" or "Information Feature", Video Presentations on "Feature News" or "Sports" are limited to 5 minutes for the video with a 2 minute introduction, total presentation time is limited to 7 minutes.

Students may present the video in Quicktime, AVI, Windows Media Player, or Real Player. The video format must be platform independent (ie. Compatible with both Mac/Windows).

The video MUST BE presented through a local media. Time will not be allowed for downloading the video. Acceptable media formats include, VHS, DVD, CD, or Laptop.

Maximum Number of Entries: 24 in Middle School; 24 in High School


Video Production - Public Service Announcement: Student(s) will present an original video production they have completed that informs the audience on the topic: R U who U Think?

This 30 second PSA must focus on teens and the responsible use of social media to create their cyber identity.

Video Public Service Announcement: 30 Seconds in length

A Public Service Announcement, or PSA, is a non-commercial ad with a goal to change people’s attitudes about a particular social issue.

Be creative, and unique. Example: How bystanders can make a difference, or create your own slogan/phrase line.

Just remember your video must be 30 seconds. No more, no less. If credits are at the end of the video, they need to be after the 30 second mark, credits will NOT count against your 30 seconds.

Guidelines on Content

  1. Entrants should submit a PSA of 30 seconds in length on the topic.
  2. Entries must contain all original material (including music, images, etc.). No trademarked, copyrighted or branded materials, logos, products, etc., can be used without written permission from the owner or business.
  3. If used, the written permission must be presented to the Judges at the competition.
  4. PSA must contain a slogan: Example: Stand UP. Bullying. If you see it, you can stop it.
  5. PSAs must not contain any profanity or nudity.
  6. Students may present the video in Quicktime, AVI, Windows Media Player, or Real Player. The video format must be platform independent (ie. Compatible with both Mac/Windows).

ALL VIDEO PSA'S SHALL BE UPLOADED TO CLASSSCENE.COM before attending KSTL or before leaving KSTL. Information will be provided in an email to advisors on how to do this.

Maximum Number of Entries: 24 for both Middle School and High School


Website Design: Students will compete and present an original website in an open category for school web pages, teacher web pages, community web pages, etc. Web pages MUST BE student designed. You may not present someone else's work.

Presentation is limited to 7 minutes.  
Maximum Number of Entries: 24 in Middle School; 24 in High School


LOGISTICAL AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Internet Connectivity
Wireless Internet Connectivity will be available in the presentation rooms, however Internet reliability cannot be guaranteed! Please review the policy for KSU visitors and guests.

Students shall present their projects from a local medium, not the internet.

Equipment
Schools should bring their own laptop for presentation purposes.
MAC users should bring a VGA Adapter cable for projector connection.
All competition rooms will have an LCD projector and Multimedia Speakers for presenter use.
Video Competition rooms will have VCR's & DVD players as well.


JUDGING
 
To see how judges will score presentations, download the rubrics.

There will be 2 or 3 judges in each room and judges will ask the student(s) questions at the end of the presentation. Advisors may be asked to assist in the time-keeping part of the student presentations!


AWARDS 

Awards will be provided at the end of the competition based on presentation scores.

The following awards will be presented:

  • Plaques will be presented to the schools for first through sixth place.
  • Medals will be presented to students for 1st through 4th place finishes in each category and division.
  • Certificates will be awarded to 5th and 6th place finishers in each category and division.

PRIZES

Hundreds of dollars worth of door prizes will be given through out the day.


ADVISORS INFORMATION
 
Every school must be accompanied by at least one paid advisor. No school may "drop off" students that are unaccompanied.  Walk-in schools will not be accepted due to room and time constraints.

Advisors will be responsible for their students and will need to accompany their students to each competition activity. When students are not competing they should be encouraged to watch other student presentations.

Advisors are responsible for obtaining all proper permissions and following all copyright laws. Students shall cite their resources. Copyright and citing sources will be part of the judging process.


RULES 

This competition is open to all Kansas students in Grades 6 thru 12. Students participating in Student Technology Leadership Programs are encouraged to participate!

Each school may bring two advisors and a group of up to 10 students. Additional students may be approved if room is available. You must get permission before bringing additional students.

Each school may enter up to two presentations in each division, in either the middle school or high school age bracket.

Each student may participate in two presentations during the day, that may include: two single presentations; one single and one group presentation; or two group presentations.


COSTS

Entry Fee: $30.00 per each student and advisor (regardless of entries!)

Meals & Snacks: Morning continental breakfast, lunch in the Union food court, and afternoon snacks will be provided.


REGISTRATION

We reserve the right to limit registration.

Registration is limited to the first 300 students and advisors to register.

Deadline for entries is on the Registration page, or the maximum of 300 registrants, whichever comes first.

Notice of Cancellation must be received by Tad Hernandez.

Cancellations: No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after March 22, 2011.

Payment of fees will be required to be paid even if you do not attend, unless you follow the cancellation procedure.
